CSGS Soccer

During the Summer and Fall terms, CSGS frequently organizes friendly co-ed soccer games in the Dalhousie Wickwire field, aimed at providing CS graduate students with an opportunity to be active and get to know other students.

What You Need to Participate

Besides your will to run and chase a ball around the field, there are a few requirements to participate in our CSGS Soccer events.

  • All participants are required to fill out and sign ‘Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreement’ form in order to take part in the event.
  • All participants are required to bring their Dalhousie Student ID, MSI, andDSU Student Plan Cards in order to take part in the event.
  • Metal or Six Studded Cleats are not permitted on the Artificial Playing Surface (i.e., the Wickwire field).
  • While regular soccer shoes are not required, they are recommended, as playing on turf with sneakers can be a bit slippery.

Game Rules

It is important for us to emphasize that all CSGS Soccer events are recreational. In order to ensure everybody enjoys our event, here is a list of our game rules:

  • Games will be in total 50 minutes long, with 20 minute halves and 10 minute break in-between each half. [Subject to change based on the number of teams.
  • There will be a referee as part of our event, the referee will be in charge of making calls during the game.
  • Teams will be comprised of 5-7 on-field players (plus however many number of available subs). You may join a team the day of the event.
  • Teams can make any number of subs on the fly on stop-ball plays (i.e., throw-ins, free-kicks, penalty kicks, corners, goals, etc.).
  • Teams will be co-ed, and must have at least 2 female players.
  • Teams should agree on a team colour, however it is advised for all teams to bring both a light and dark coloured shirt to the match. Additionally, CSGS will have pinnies available during the event.
  • While there is no offside, players are expected to reflect good sportsmanship and avoid ‘cherry-picking’.
  • It is recognized that incidental contact between players is inevitable. However, all players should go out of their way to avoid creating unsafe play.
  • During the game there will be NO sliding tackles of any kind, nor physical or rough play, verbal abuse, fighting, damage to facility property and/or loss of facility permit.

Additional Regulations

It is important for us to emphasize that all CSGS Soccer events are recreational. In order to ensure everybody enjoys our event, here is a list of our game rules:

  • No alcohol, tobacco, drugs, food of any kind, or any illegal substance or thing is permitted at the field..
  • Chewing Gum is not permitted on the Artificial Playing Surface.
  • Glass bottles are not permitted on or around the Artificial Playing Surface.
  • Animals are not permitted within the Stadium. Exception made for working animals such as ‘seeing eye dogs’.
  • Bikes, roller blades (skates) or skateboards are not permitted within the field.

All Faculty of Computer Science graduate students, Post-Doctoral Fellows, Faculty, and Staff are welcome to attend and participate in our CSGS Soccer events.
